La Rucia Ranch: Hunting
La Rucia Ranch is in Brooks and Hidalgo Counties, an area of South Texas that some refer to as the Wild Horse Desert. The fabled brush country of South Texas is well-known for its Muy Grande, white-tailed deer, but this area also possesses an incredibly rich diversity of other wildlife, both game and non-game. Rio Grande wild turkeys, bobwhite quail, mourning and white-wing doves, and javelinas abound in this area to the delight of traveling hunters, while other wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy an plethora of songbirds, shorebirds, raptors, small mammals, and an ecological wonderland that does not disappoint.
In 2002, Timothy Fulbright and Fred Bryant, both of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, wrote a book titled The Last Great Habitat , proclaiming this area one of the most biodiverse and ecologically important regions in North America. The abundance of large ranches has helped to maintain the native habitat for wildlife and protect it from fragmentation.
La Rucia has been owned and operated by the family since 1895 with additional land purchased in the 1920’s. The ranch began running commercial deer hunts around 1983 and has established itself as a well-known property that perennially produces quality whitetails. With 18,000 acres that’s high-fenced, all deer on the La Rucia are native whitetails; there are no released deer or pen-raised deer. La Rucia has a history of focusing on core principals of range and wildlife management, ensuring that deer and other wildlife are supported by highly productive habitats that provide the necessary food, cover, water and space that is required for healthy wildlife populations.
Dating back to 1997, La Rucia has been working closely with Wildlife Systems, Inc. (WSI), owned by wildlife biologist Greg Simons. This partnership has provided a winning combination through the Ranch’s commitment to its natural resource program, combined with the expertise that WSI brings to the table as one of the most successful outfitting operations in the country, which was formed in 1987. The La Rucia whitetail hunts are generally packaged as a 4-day all-inclusive programs, with all hunts being conducted in December. Nearest commercial airport is in McAllen. Quality hunting, comfortable lodging, warm service, and tasty food provide the necessary requisites that ensure a successful hunting program.
